About us
In 2002, The Georgia State University administration encouraged the establishment of an Emeriti Organization by employing a professor emeritus part-time to direct this development. A committee, consisting of one professor emeritus from each College, appointed by the Deans of that College, was formed. This committee, which named itself the Coordinating Committee of the Emeriti Association of Georgia State University, wrote the bylaws which describe the terms of the members and the duties of the officers and the subcommittees. The officers are elected by the Coordinating Committee each year.
The Georgia State University administration has included the suppport and nurturance of the Emeriti Association as one of the responsibilities of Walter Massey, the Associate Vice President for the Constituents Program, and his assistant, Teresa Kibler. Walter Massey brings to us the experience of working with a similar organization at a large regional university. The ideas, experience, and support contributed by Mr. Massey and Mrs. Kibler are invaluable to our Association.
Since its beginning, the Emeriti Association has had a least one event each quarter. For the first few years, the events mostly consisted of lunches with a distinguished speaker. Later, the activities expanded into parties, trips and other informative events such as a lesson at the library about its use. So far, there has been no charge for these events, since the costs have been paid from the interest earned on the endowment established by the Emeriti Association. The endowment consist of contributions by individual Emeriti to Georgia State University for specific assignment to the Emeriti Association. During its establishment, the Emeriti Association sponsored a fund drive for its own support and the University placed in Alumni Hall a plaque that contains the names of all emeriti who originally contributed at least $1,000 to the Association. The Coordinating Committee hopes that all emeriti will support the organization through financial backing, collaboration, and attendance at events.
