Total

44.0 hours per week

The hours per week are calculated in order to insure a 2,000 hour internship experience. Given the number of weeks (5) of annual leave and holidays allotted to each intern, the general calculation is 44x47 = 2068. This gives interns approximately 8 possible sick days before they need to make up hours to reach the required 2,000. Approximately half of the intern's time is committed to service activities while the other half is committed to informal and formal training experiences. Service activities include individual psychotherapy, initial assessment, group therapy, couples therapy, crisis counseling and crisis intervention, psycho-educational outreach, supervision of Practicum students, and meetings. The formalized training program includes individual and group supervision of individual clients, group therapy supervision, and a series of training seminars.

Limitations on Outside Private Practice

In order to assure quality service to clients and receive the most benefits from training, interns agree to limit the number of outside client contact hours (i.e. client contact outside of the Counseling Center) to four per week. If interns choose to provide therapy outside of the center, Georgia State is not liable, nor will any Counseling Center supervisors provide supervision for these clients. Such clients will also be seen on the intern's own time, not University time (i.e. such clients are not to conflict with the scheduled 40 Counseling Center hours). If interns provide consultation for pay during these hours, university policy states that they must take Vacation Leave to do so. At the end of internship, any cases that interns intend to refer to their own private practice must be presented for peer review.
