A math placement test is required for all students who need or desire to enroll in a math course higher than Math 1101. All new students (Freshman and Transfers) who need or desire to take a math course higher than Math 1101 must register for the Math Placement Test through their GoSolar account prior to their Incept Orientation and should not attend walk-in math placement test dates. If you experience difficulty registering through your GoSolar account, please contact the Help Desk at 404-413-4357. Current Georgia State University students who are already attending courses may attend the walk-in math placement test dates.
Georgia State University requires all students seeking a baccalaureate degree to satisfactorily complete a basic core curriculum of general education subjects. In Area A of the core curriculum, students are required to select a course in mathematics. For some majors, the math requirement has restricted choices (i.e. the lowest level course, Math 1101, is not accepted by some majors). A math placement test is required for all students who need or desire to enroll in a course higher than Math 1101.
If you only require Math 1101 for your major, the math placement test is not required. It is important to note that Math 1101 is a stand-alone course and is not a prerequisite for Math 1111 or higher. For majors that require Math 1111, 1113, or higher, the test is mandatory. It is recommended that the Math Placement Test be taken before attending INCEPT. There is no fee to take the test the first time. Freshmen Learning Community Students intending to choose a learning community with Math 1111 must take the placement test before attending Incept and earn the appropriate score required for Math 1111 or higher.
Description of Test
Georgia State University uses the COMPASS exam (designed by ACT) as a math placement exam to help accurately place students in college math courses. The test administered at Georgia State University may include the following two areas: algebra and trigonometry. The number of areas in which a student will be tested will depend upon the student's level of ability. All students will take items in the area of algebra. The score on the algebra section will determine if a student takes items in the area of trigonometry. Go to the following website to view a few sample questions for each of the two math sections (algebra and trigonometry): www.act.org/compass/sample/math.html.
There is no test fee for taking the math placement test for the first time. However, students must pay $50.00 to re-take the math placement test on a walk-in basis. Payment should be in the form of a check or money order and made payable to Georgia State University. Click here for more information.
