Counseling Center

Exit Requirements

The following exit criteria were selected because they meet the APA and the State of Georgia licensing board requirements, the specific needs of the Center as a service and training agency, and the professional experience and competency needs of psychologists-in-training. In order to successfully complete the internship, an intern must demonstrate attainment of the following criteria:

  • Total training time should approximate 2000 hours (1000 hours training and 1000 hours service activities).
  • A minimum of 500 hours has been spent in direct client contact (about 22 hours/week are scheduled). Accumulated hours include all completed contact hours per week of triage, individual, couples and/or group therapy; supervision of practicum students, outreach and consultation. Note: We have every expectation that interns will accumulate more than 500 direct service hours.
  • 40 hours per week have been assigned to the office and 4 hours per week have been assigned to research (total 44 hours). We have to assign 44 hours per week because interns have 5 weeks of vacation leave and we need to be able to account for the 2,000 hours of overall training -- 44 x 47 weeks = 2068 hours/year.
  • A balanced case load has been maintained that includes a mixture of short-term (personal and vocational therapy) and long-term clients, ethnic and lifestyle minority clients, male and female clients. Interns may see some 1-2 long-term clients (i.e. beyond the usual 15-session limit) throughout the year.
  • A minimum of 3-4 outreach programs per semester were completed over the course of the year.
  • Intern provided emergency counseling for the Center eight hours per week and rotated through Housing On-Call after hours with senior staff and the Postdoctoral Associate. At all times, a senior training staff, served as emergency back-up.
  • A minimum of 3 hours per week was spent in regularly scheduled formal face-to-face supervision, 2 hours of which were on an individual basis, and 1 hour of which was on a group supervision format.
  • Regular and prompt attendance and participation in seminars.
  • Regular and prompt attendance and participation in scheduled meetings and case conferences.
  • Maintained quality and timely clinical records in accordance with the Center's procedures (e.g. Initial Assessment must be completed in 1 week, Termination Notes must be completed within 2 weeks, and Progress Notes must be done weekly). All notes must be signed by a licensed psychologist.
  • Maintained ethical standards and conduct (e.g. sees clients on time, consults appropriately, maintains clear boundaries, finds others to cover their emergency time when on vacation).
  • Competency-based evaluations (both individual and seminar) indicated that the intern's performance is commensurate with that expected of an intern in this program.
  • Competency requirements were met for a one-year full-time PRE-DOCTORAL internship status. \
  • Outreach activities will be kept on the computerized system and will be entered by the end of each semester.
  • Provide the Training Director with the following forms:
  1. Self-assessment report
  2. Goal statement for internship and supervision
  3. Internship/Midyear and Final Intern Logs
  4. Seminar Evaluation Forms
  5. Internship Evaluation Report
