Georgia State University To Hold December Commencement Ceremony

Georgia State University announced today (June 5) that it has reversed the decision to move to one annual commencement ceremony, and accordingly will hold the Fall 2012 ceremony for undergraduate, masters, and specialists degrees on December 18 at 2 p.m. in the Georgia Dome. The Doctoral hooding ceremony will be held on December 7 at 7 p.m. in the Rialto Center for the Arts, as previously announced.

The prior decision to move to one commencement ceremony in the Spring was a result of several challenges, including the academic calendar, Georgia Dome availability and budgetary concerns. However, after receiving thoughtful feedback from the GSU community, the university was able to resolve those challenges and reached the decision to continue to hold seperate ceremonies at the conclusion of the Fall and Spring semesters.

"Georgia State is honoring the expressed desire of students and their families to continue to have a Fall ceremony and celebrate their accomplishments in a timely manner," President Mark Becker said.

The deadline to apply for December 2012 graduation is June 15, 2012. Summer 2012 graduates participated in the May 2012 ceremony, and the practice of allowing summer graduates to walk in the Spring commencement will continue.

Important Dates for Grads

  • September 21, 2012 - Any changes to diploma names must be submitted to the One Stop Shop (227 Sparks Hall)
  • September 25, 2012 - Deadline to order caps and gowns online
  • October 9, 2012 - Full Semester Midpoint
  • October 16, 2012 - Tentative List of Graduate posted on the Graduation Office website
  • October 29, 2012 - Extended deadline to order caps and gowns online 
  • November 5 and 6, 2012 - Commencement Fair - West Exhibit Area, Urban Life building - 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • December 7, 2012 - All special test scores (CLEP, Advanced Placement and legislative exams) must be on file in the Graduation Office (75 Piedmont Avenue, Suite 1190)
  • December 7, 2012 - All grade adjustments for previous terms must be on file in the One Stop Shop (227 Sparks Hall)
  • December 7, 2012 - Last day to pick up Quick Passes in the Commencement Office (75 Piedmont Avenue, Suite 1190)
  • December 18, 2012 - Bachelor, Master and Specialist Commencement Ceremony - Georgia Dome - 2:00 p.m.
  • December 20, 2012 - Official Degree Conferral Date for Fall Semester 2012
