Dr.Mark Becker

Dr. Mark P. Becker - President, GSU (Chair)

Biography: Dr. Mark P. Becker, the seventh president of Georgia State University, began his tenure on Jan.1, 2009. President Becker has launched a major strategic planning initiative focused on positioning the university, as it sets its sights on its second century, to become one of the worldís premier urban research universities. Dr. Becker received his BS in Mathematics (Magna Cum Laude) from Towson State University in Maryland and his PhD in Statistics from The Pennsylvania State University. From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Becker was appointed Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of South Carolina. He was formerly dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota from 2001 to 2004 and associate dean for academic affairs and professor of biostatistics at the University Of Michigan School Of Public Health from 1989 to 2000.

Dr.Xiliang CuDr. Xiliang Cui - President, BLCU (Chair)

Biography: Dr. Xiliang Cui, President of Beijing Language and Culture University. A professor and doctoral adviser in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, President Cui obtained his PhD in Linguistics from Peking University. He currently serves as the Vice President of International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, President of the Linguists Association of Beijing, and member of the Standing Committee of China Language Society. In addition to more than 40 journal articles, President Cui has also published a number of books including Idioms and the Chinese Humanity World (1997),Language Cognition and Understanding (2001), Collections of Studies in Chinese Linguistics of Beijing Language and Culture University: Grammar Volume (2004) Chinese Language Teaching: Reciprocity and Interaction between China and Abroad (2007),Introduction to Linguistics (2009).

Dr.Jun Liu

Dr. Jun Liu - Associate Provost, International Initiatives, GSU

Biography: Dr. Jun Liu is Associate Provost for International Initiatives at Georgia State University. Prior to this position, Liu was Professor and Head of the English Department, Director of the Confucius Institute, and Assistant Vice-Provost for Global Initiatives at the University of Arizona. Liu has also held multiple leadership roles as an international educator. He served as Past President of TESOL International (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc.), Vice President of ISCLT (International Society of Chinese Language Teaching), and Senior Advisor to "Hanban" (Office of the Chinese Language Council International). Liu has published extensively in the area of intercultural communication, communicative competence, and language education. He authored the book "Asian students' classroom communication patterns in US universities" (Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 2001), and co-authored "Studying in the United States" (Tsinghua University Press, 2007). Liu is well traveled and has given more than 60 plenary and invited speeches in more than 20 countries since 2000.

Dr.William Long

Dr. William - Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, GSU

Biography: Dr. William Long is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. His fields of interest include health diplomacy and transnational governance, international cooperation and conflict resolution, international political economy, and international trade and technology transfer. He has received multiple research and teaching awards from the United States Institute of Peace, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Hewlett, Pew, Sloan, and MacArthur Foundations, the Fulbright Commission, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Commission of the European Union. Dr. Long is the former chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dean Long has served as principal investigator on several high-profile grants, including a MacArthur Foundation†sponsored program on Science, Technology and International Security.

Dr.Fenwick HussDr. Fenwick Huss -  Dean, J. Mack Robinson College of Business, GSU

Biography: Dr. H. Fenwick Huss was named Dean of the J. Mack Robinson College of Business in July 2004 after serving as associate dean of the college for six years. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and holds a master's degree in economics from the University of Connecticut and a doctorate in accountancy from the University of Tennessee.Dean Huss has been a prime mover in developing the college's curriculum, hiring top faculty and helping raise the profile and rankings of the college's programs. Under his leadership, Robinson has launched†six new graduate programs: the Global Partners MBA (with Sorbonne University and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), the Professional MBA program, an Executive Doctorate and three new Specialized Master's programs. Dean Huss has lectured extensively in the Peopleís Republic of China over the past two decades on business information needs in transitional economies. He currently serves on AACSB International's Maintenance of Accreditation Committee and previously served on the Peace Through Commerce Task Force. He is also on the Advisory Board of AACSB's†award-winning publication BizE.

Baotong Gu - Director, Confucius Institute at GSU

Biography:Baotong Gu is director of the GSU Confucius Institute and Associate Professor of English at Georgia State University. Dr. Gu's research interests lie at the intersection of several different areas: technology theories, writing technology development, technology transfer, digital literacy, cross cultural communication, content management, etc. His main publications include a scholarly monograph,From Oracle Bones to Computers: The Emergence of Writing Technologies in China (2009); and four co-edited collections, Content Management: Implications for Technical Communicators (2008); Content Management: Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice  (2009); Contemporary Western Rhetoric: Critical Methods and Paradigms (1998), and Contemporary Western Rhetoric: Speech and Discourse Criticism (1998).His most recent work,Designing Web Applications for the 21st-Century Writing Classrooms, co-edited with George Pullman, is being published by Baywood Press.Dr. Gu has taught various courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including technical writing, professional writing, electronic writing and publishing, business writing, technical editing, grant and proposal writing, and writing in organizations.

Fengchun Nie

Zhong Chen - Deputy Director, 

BLCU

Biography: Zhong Chen is from Beijing, China, and serves as Deputy Director of the Confucius Institute at Georgia State University. He is also Professor and Associate Dean of the College of Chinese Studies, Beijing Language and Culture University. His research and teaching interests include cognitive linguistics, Chinese linguistics,pragmatics and classic works on Western linguistics and has published widely in this field. He has taught a broad range of Chinese language courses, such as Elementary Chinese, Intermediary Chinese, Advanced Chinese, Elementary Spoken and Listening Chinese, Chinese vocabulary, HSK Training and so on. Chen will be a visiting faculty at the GSU Confucius Institute through 2015.

Charleata Battle

Charleata Battle - Associate to the Director, Confucius Institute at GSU

Biography: Charleata Battle is the Associate to the Director of the GSU Confucius Institute. She manages business affairs and financial administration for the institute. Her professional career began with the launch of Chandler Scott International, a real estate company, in Alpharetta, Georgia in 2000 where she served as broker and owner. She is a graduate of American Intercontinental University where she earned her Bachelors of Business Administration in Management, and she holds a Professional Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Organizational Management from Georgia State University’s own J. Mack Robinson College of Business. She specializes in international business and contracts.

Fengchun Nie

Fengchun Nie - Visiting Professor, BLCU

Biography: Fengchun Nie is from Beijing, China and is a Visiting Faculty at the Georgia State University Confucius Institute and is a lecturer at the Beijing Language and Culture University. His research and teaching interests include Modern Chinese Grammar and teaching Chinese as a second language. He previously taught a broad range of Chinese language courses to foreign students. Nie will be a visiting faculty at the GSU Confucius Institute through 2013 and will be teaching some Chinese language courses for the Confucius Institute and the Department of Modern Languages.

Fengchun Nie

Mingyue Wang - Visiting Professor, BLCU

Biography: Minyue Wang is a Visiting Faculty at the Georgia State University Confucius Institute, and also a lecturer at Beijing Language and Culture University. He has taught such courses as spoken Chinese, English-Chinese Translation, and introduction to Chinese cultures. His main research interest is English-Chinese Contrastive Studies. He will be teaching at the GSU Confucius Institute from September, 2012 to August, 2013.

Shanshan Wang

Shanshan Wang - Visiting Professor, BLCU

Biography: Shanshan Wang is from Shandong, China and is a Visiting Faculty at the Georgia State University Confucius Institute. She received her Bachelor’s degree of International Economy and Trade from Qingdao University and her Masters’ degree of International Economy from Beijing Language and Culture University.  She has the rich intern experiences in China’s state-owned financial sections, such as the People's Bank of China, China International Finance Forum. She also has the extensive business and language teaching experiences to foreign students as well as native students. She will be teaching Elementary Business Chinese and Chinese Business Culture courses through 2013.

Fengchun Nie

Danyang Chang - Visiting Professor, BLCU

Biography: Danyang Chang is from Beijing, China, and is a Visiting Professor at the Confucius Institute at Georgia State University. A lecturer at the Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Chang received his training in teaching Chinese as second language and Chinese Language and Literature from Beijing Language and Culture University and has published widely in this field. He has taught a broad range of Chinese courses such as Business Spoken Chinese, Advanced Spoken Chinese, Chinese listening, reading comprehension, writing and so on. Chang will be a visiting faculty at the GSU Confucius Institute through 2015.

Fengchun Nie

Jing Wang- Visiting Professor, BLCU

Biography: Jing Wang is from Henan, China and is a Visiting Professor at the Confucius Institute at Georgia State University. A professor at the Beijing Language and Culture University, Dr. Wang received her training in Chinese language and literature from Zhengzhou University and has published widely in this field. She previously taught a broad range of Chinese language courses, such as College Chinese, Basic Writing, Practical Writing and so on. She is also the editor of College Chinese and Practical Writing. She has been working in Continuing Education College at Beijing Language and Culture University, mainly responsible for the core curriculum of TCFL major. Dr.Wang will be a visiting faculty at the GSU Confucius Institute through 2015.

Fengchun Nie

Kun Nie - Graduate Instructor, BLCU

Biography: Kun Nie is from Hebei, China and is a Graduate Instructor at the Confucius Institute at Georgia State University. She received her Master’s Degree in Chinese International Education from Beijing Language and Culture University. Kun Nie is not only well trained in Chinese linguistics, but also experienced in teaching Chinese as a second language. She has taught at Beijing Language and Culture University, International Relations College, Tsinghua University, and University of Chicago Center in Beijing.

Fengchun Nie

Xiaoyu Zhang - Graduate Instructor, BLCU

Biography: Xiaoyu Zhang is from Beijing, China and is a Graduate Instructor at the Confucius Institute at Georgia State University. She is a graduate student from Beijing Language and Culture University, majoring in Chinese Linguistics with an emphasis on Teaching Chinese as a second language.Zhang has lots of experience in teaching Chinese as a second language and previously taught different kinds of Chinese language courses to foreign students. Meanwhile, with a special interest in traditional Chinese handicraft art (Chinese knot and Chinese paper-cuts) and Chinese dances and songs, she will be teaching such courses as Elementary Chinese and Traditional Chinese Handicrafts.

Shi SunShi Sun - Deputy Director, BLCU

Biography: Shi Sun is from Beijing, China and serves as Deputy Director of the Confucius Institute at GSU and also Associate Professor at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). Sun has taught Mandarin Chinese language and culture courses to non-native undergraduate and undergraduate students as well as students specializing in linguistics.  She also researches international student education management and various cross-cultural issues. Sun was a visiting faculty at the GSU Confucius Institute through 2012 and lectured advanced Chinese courses.

Wenwen ZhuWenwen Zhu - Faculty, BLCU

Biography: Wenwen Zhu is from Beijing, China and is a Visiting Faculty at the Georgia State University Confucius Institute and is a lecturer at the Beijing Language and Culture University. Dr. Zhu received her training in linguistics and applied linguistics from Beijing Language and Culture University and has published widely in this field. She is very experienced in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and previously taught a broad range of Chinese language courses to foreign students, including intensive short-term Chinese language training for international corporate clients and credit courses for the Department of Modern Languages at GSU. Zhu was a visiting faculty at the GSU Confucius Institute through 2012 and lectured a Corporate Business Chinese.

Jingting LiuJingting Liu

Biography: Jingting Liu is currently a graduate instructor in the CI at GSU, the first business oriented of its kind in the US.  She achieved her bachelor’s degree in Economics and will soon finish her master’s program in International Politics and Economics. With a special research interest in international business, especially the trade for cultural goods between China and the world, movies and books for example.She worked in the Confucius Institute to help people know more about China’s economy and culture.  She lectured  a non-credit course “China on Screen” on Chinese language and social background through films.

Yi ChenYi Chen- Graduate Instructor, BLCU

Biography: Yi Chen is from Hubei, China, one of the Gradate Instructors at the Confucius Institute of Georgia State University. She is a graduate student from Beijing Language and Language University, majoring in Foreign Applied Linguistics with an emphasis on Translation. Chen worked extensively as an interpreter for the CI department of BLCU after she obtained her B.A in English Language and Literature from the school.  She’s been engaged with the CI at GSU since its establishment and has enjoyed the privilege of escorting the CI’s first two groups of students on their Study Abroad Program to China.

Yue WangYue Wang

Biography: Yue Wang is from Beijing, China and is a Chinese teaching instructor at the Georgia State University Confucius Institute and is a postgraduate at the Beijing Language and Culture University.
Her major is Chinese linguistics. Wang has lots of experiences in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and previously taught different kinds of Chinese language courses to foreign students, She taught Chinese elementary and advanced Comprehensive courses in Tstinghua University, listening and speaking Chinese in Beijing Union University, Chinese practice courses in Beijing Language and Culture University. Wang was a Chinese teaching instructor at the GSU Confucius Institute until the summer of 2012 and lectured elementary Chinese language and Chinese songs for the Confucius Institute.

Qingxia HuangQingxia Huang

Biography: Qingxia Huang is from Beijing Language and Culture University, China and is a graduate instructor at the Georgia State University Confucius Institute. She taught in Princeton in Beijing Chinese language program and Beijing Language and Culture University. Huang lectured Chinese courses and researching teaching Chinese as a foreign language at the GSU Confucius Institute through 2011.
