A leading research university in Atlanta, Georgia

Jasmine Newson

Class of: 2013
Hometown; High School: Villa Rica, GA; Villa Rica High School
Major/Minor: Sociology/Pre-Medicine

I chose to attend Georgia State University because of the location, the diversity, and the opportunities.

Campus Activities and Organizations: Softer Touch President, Resident Assistant, Senator for the College of Arts and Sciences, Membership Director for Minority Pre-Med/ Pre-Dental, Past Corps Member and Team Leader for Jumpstart, Past FYRE (First Year Residential Experience) Mentor, and Past Campus PALS Mentor.

Most Memorable Georgia State experience: When I won Miss Sophomore 2010. It was definitely one of the most defining moments in my life. I had not tapped into my full potential yet and had not realized what I can do with it until I got to college. I worked hard in my campaign and believed in myself for one of the first times. Winning showed me that not only does my family see my potential, but the student body does as well.

If you could be a cartoon character, who would you be and why? I would probably be Goofy because I am such a jokester and I absolutely love to laugh. I like to have a good time and most people actually call me Goofy on a daily basis!

Favorite Georgia State tradition: My favorite Georgia State tradition is Panther Prowl, which is a Spotlight Program Board’s monthly event. This event made me fall in love with GSU my first week and I still attend Panther Prowls every month.

What advice would you give to incoming students? Find what makes you happy and brings the best out of you, surround yourself with positive people, have fun, get involved, and find your balance.

After I graduate from Georgia State, I hope to go straight into Medical School to become a Pediatrician to specialize in Surgery or Oncology.
