A leading research university in Atlanta, Georgia

Courtney McDonald

Class of: 2013
Hometown and High School: Marietta, GA; Pebblebrook High School/Pope High School
Major/Minor: Journalism (Concentration in Public Relations)/Sociology

I chose to attend Georgia State University because I loved the urban campus and the diversity that came with it. Georgia State presented a great opportunity to meet people from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures. I was also overwhelmingly impressed with the brand new apartment-style dorms; that may have been what ultimately won me over!

Campus Activities and Organizations: 2011 Inceptor; Omicron Delta Kappa Member; 1913 Society Ambassador; Gamma Sigma Sigma, Inc. Sister

Most Memorable Georgia State Experience: My first time walking to class in the rain. I thought it would be a good idea to wear flip-flops; I figured if I wore them it wouldn’t matter whether or not my feet got wet. Horrible idea! I ended up slipping and falling down the very crowded stairs leading into the courtyard. I dropped all of my things in the rain and was so embarrassed! I have not worn flip-flops in the rain since.

If you could be a cartoon character, who would you be and why? I would definitely be Kim Possible! It would be incredible if I could live my life as a high school student by day and an undercover secret agent by night. On top of that, she totally lays the smack down on all the evil villains that get in her way! I would love to be that confident, powerful heroine on a daily basis, but I totally already am.

Favorite Georgia State Tradition: My favorite tradition would for sure be rubbing the nose of bronze Pounce statue in Unity Plaza. When I was an Inceptor I would tell all of my students the final leap to making the jump from being a regular person to a Georgia State Panther was rubbing the nose. It brings wisdom, luck, and maybe some germs from your fellow classmates. It's all about unification and sharing. Go Panthers!

What advice would you give to incoming students? I would advise incoming students to dive head first into everything that Georgia State University has to offer. There are countless student activities and organizations within this university, and you’re only given one shot to seize all of these opportunities. You're going to  try new things, you're going to meet new people, and it's going to be awesome! Don’t let this time in your life slip by without trying something new and getting involved in any area that is of interest to you. You can, without a doubt, find your special interest here.

After I graduate from Georgia State, I hope to be doing something that I love. I really have no idea what I want to do and that's such an overwhelming question! I love to do some many different things. My interest and abilities are so vast. So maybe I just want to be in school forever!? If I had to choose right now I would love to host a radio show. Maybe half music, half my opinion on current events. Something half way between NPR and B98.5 FM, but with a Courtney McDonald spin!
