A leading research university in Atlanta, Georgia

Alexis Avery

Class of: 2013
Hometown and High School: Snellville, Georgia; Shiloh High School
Major/Minor: Psychology/Sociology

I chose to attend Georgia State University because of the amazing opportunities for internships in the city of Atlanta, the psychology department, diversity, location (it’s far enough from home but not too far just in case I’m in need of a home cooked meal), my HOPE Scholarship, and the amazing housing facilities.

Campus Activities and Organizations: Pantherettes Dance Team, Spotlight Panther Prowl Committee, Softer Touch Treasurer, Jumpstart Corps Member, and Miss Blue and White for the Pi Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Most Memorable Georgia State Experience: making the Pantherettes Dance Team, being crowned Miss Blue and White, and Georgia State being closed for an entire week for random snow days.

If you could be a cartoon character, who would you be and why? Penny Proud from The Proud Family. Not only does my favorite teacher from high school still call me Penny Proud every time she sees me, but her motto is “I’m Penny Proud, I’m cute and I’m loud and I’ve got it going on.” That is the perfect description of my personality in a nutshell.

Favorite Georgia State Tradition: PLAZA TIME and PANTHER PROWL!!!

What advice would you give to incoming students? Get involved on campus! As an incoming student, it is hard to figure out which organization is best for you; but the earlier you start trying to find what best suits you, the better. College is about finding yourself and that is exactly what you can do at Georgia State. Network! Meet a new person everyday because trust me it will pay off in the long run.

After I graduate from Georgia State, I hope to attend graduate school and obtain a more in-depth degree in psychology to eventually open my own practice and save the world one conversation at a time.
