Program Information

The Department of Sociology offers a Bachelor of Arts degree which   introduces students to key processes and methods, in addition to preparing students for graduate work in sociology and related fields. Students majoring in sociology explore the ways in which individual experiences and specific events are linked to larger social processes and social structures.  Students can complete a General Program in Sociology or specialize in one of five concentrations: Family, Race and Urban Studies, Gender and Sexuality, and Gerontology. Within the specializations, however, there is a fair amount of flexibility for students to pursue topics of interest. Students wishing to be Sociology majors must first be advised by the Sociology Undergraduate advisor. For more information, visit the advisement website.

This is a suggested 4-year schedule of courses based on degree requirements in the current catalog. 

This guide is not a substitute for academic advisement – contact your advisement office if you have any questions about scheduling or about your degree requirements.  Also see the Undergraduate Catalog for a complete list of requirements and electives to choose from.

Students may choose to attend a summer term to reduce their course load during fall or spring semesters but still stay on track to graduate in four years.

If considering this major, these classes will allow you to explore this option before making a decision: Soci 1101 and Soci 1160.

Freshman Year

Freshman Milestones:

• Complete all Area A requirements

Sophomore Year

Sophomore Milestones:

• Complete all core requirements   

Junior Year

Junior Milestones:

• Meet with the Department Faculty Advisor
• Register with Career Services Office
• Apply to the Sociology Department Internship Program  

Senior Year

Senior Milestones:

• Students must have 39 hours at GSU taken at the 3000/4000 level for residency, and complete 120 hours required for graduation

*This course will fulfill the CTW Required.
