Toys for Tots began in 1947 in Los Angeles, California. Major William L. Hendricks founded it when his wife could not find an organization to donate a doll intended for a needy child. Hendricks gathered a group of Marines and, by placing collection bins around the city, collected over 5,000 toys for local children. Their efforts were so successful in the first year that Toys for Tots was launched as a national campaign the following year.
