Goal

• To provide the skills necessary to help advance female staff into senior leadership positions.

Eligibility

Qualified applicants will meet the following:

• Hold the position of Assistant Director (or equivalent) or higher
• Have at least one year of full-time service with Georgia State University
• Demonstrate high performance in professional experience
• Considered a “high potential” applicant for future advancement

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory for program events, including the orientation kickoff, workshops, and graduation. Prior to submitting an application, applicants are encouraged to review the Program Summary to ensure they can attend all of the scheduled sessions.

Application Process and Deadline

Each applicant must have an official Georgia State “sponsor” who signs the participant’s application and submits a letter of recommendation. The sponsor must be an Assistant Dean, Assistant Vice President or higher held position. An additional letter of recommendation is required from an immediate supervisor if not an Assistant Dean, Assistant Vice President or higher held position.

Submit the completed application packets electronically by November 2, 2012 to aleyton1@gsu.edu. 

Selection Process

A selection committee reviews application materials and selects applicants for in-person interviews. The interviews are based upon the overall strength of the applicant, and looks specifically to the leadership characteristics and skills presented as well as diversity, educational and experiential backgrounds. In each application cycle up to 15 selected applicants are invited to participate in the program to represent a cross-section of the University’s community.

All applicants are notified by Friday, November 16, 2012 of the final decisions.

Initiated under the Office of Advancement of Women, the mission of the mentor program is to promote professional readiness among women. The program was piloted in Spring 2007 with nine mentor-mentee pairs. The program objectives are to:

• Provide opportunities for networking and communication
• Encourage employee growth and development
• Promote knowledge and involvement in the university community
• Foster progress toward and support of personal and career-related goals
• Exposure to professional trends in management
• Develop management skills
• Develop communication skills
• Teach navigation of the formal and informal university structure
• Give confidential, constructive, and professional feedback 

FAQs:

How often will the mentor-mentee pair meet?
Each mentor-mentee pair will develop their own regular meeting schedule. Pairs are encouraged to meet at least twice a month.

How will the pairs be determined?
The Mentor Program Committee will select the most appropriate mentor for each mentee selected for the program. Selection will be based upon the mentee's areas of interest as well as the mentor's corresponding expertise.

Is the program for women only?
The program is an initiative of the Advancement of Women. Mentee applications are for female staff only. Mentors may be male or female.

Are there any additional program requirements?
Mentors and mentees will be expected to attend three additional events (opening session, mid-point session, closing session) throughout the course of the program.

What are the eligibility requirements to participate as a mentor or mentee?

Mentee requirements:

• Currently in a non-management position at Georgia State
• Employed for at least 1 year at Georgia State

Mentor requirements:

• Currently in a management position at Georgia State
• 5 years professional experience
• 3 years as a manager
• Employed for at least 2 years at Georgia State University with at least 1 year as a manager at Georgia State
