GSU-62 FAQ

Application Process

How can I become eligible for the GSU-62 program?

GSU-62 is a waiver program that covers tuition and certain fees. To receive the waiver, the following conditions must be met:

  1. The applicant must first apply for and be accepted to the University as either a Freshman, Transfer, Postbaccalaureate, or Graduate. (Click here for requirements and deadlines.)
  2. The applicant must be a resident of the State of Georgia.
  3. The applicant must submit a copy of a birth certificate, or a current passport for documentation of age. Please bring original documentation when submitting the paperwork.
  4. Once accepted, the applicant may not register until the first day of late registration. If an applicant chooses to register in regular registration, he or she will be responsible for payment of tuition and related fees (such as lab fees for language courses, music, science, etc.).
How do I know which student type to apply for?

Read the requirements for the various student application types. Graduate students should refer to the college of their choice.

Do I have to apply online?

If you apply online, an application fee will be assessed. As you are exempt from this fee, we recommend that you download the appropriate application, write GSU-62 across the top, complete and mail to: Office of Undergraduate Admissions, P. O. Box 4009, Atlanta, GA 30302-4009. You may also come into the office to complete the application (Sparks Hall, Room 200, 30 Gilmer Street, Atlanta, 30303).

When should I apply, and what documents will I need?

For specific deadlines and required documents, please review the requirements for your application type. Graduate students should refer to the college of their choice.

How long will it take to process my file?

It normally takes from four to six weeks to process a file, depending on when the application and documentation are received. The sooner everything arrives, the sooner we can process the file and make a decision.

If I have copies of my transcripts, can you just take those?

No. We cannot take transcripts from you — not ones that have been opened. Official transcripts from each institution you have attended must be requested by you personally. The college or university may send them directly to us at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, P.O. Box 4009, Atlanta, GA 30302-4009 (or to the individual graduate school), or, if you are applying as an Undergraduate, you may have the transcripts sent to you, then bring them in to us in the official envelope. Remember, if the transcript is sent to you, it may not be opened before you bring it to us. Check with the individual graduate schools to determine the graduate policy on submission of official transcripts.

Next Steps After Acceptance

I've been accepted. What do I do next?

Review the information on our Next Steps for Accepted Students page.

If I’m accepted, when and how do I register?

Students wishing to use the GSU-62 waiver may not register until the first day of late registration (usually also the first day of classes). This date is available each semester on GOSOLAR. If you register before this, you will not receive the waiver and will have to pay the tuition and fees yourself.

What if I just want to audit a class, just sit in. Do I still have to go through the application process and turn in all my transcripts?

Yes, at Georgia State University you must apply and be admitted to a specific status in order to audit a class. Also, this process requires the permission of the instructor of the class. Audit forms are available through the One Stop Shop. Once a form is signed by the professor, it must be taken to the One Stop Shop for registration. Please remember that in order to receive the waiver, this may not happen until the first day of Late Registration.

How do I know what classes are available?

The Schedule of Classes is available on GOSOLAR. Go to the Home Page (www.gsu.edu), Click GOSOLAR, then Schedule of Classes (in right column), Semester you are looking for (as FA2010), name of Department (Eng/Math/Women’s Studies/Govt, etc.), scroll through classes.

What academic counseling is available to me?

Freshman, or transfer students with fewer than 42 hours are advised by the Student Advisement Office; the Office of Academic Advisement in each of the academic colleges counsels applicants with 43 or more transferrable hours; all academic assistance at the graduate level comes from the graduate advisors in each graduate college. Postbaccalaureate applicants, as they are not degree seeking, do not receive academic advisement.

Once you are accepted as an undergraduate student, a “Next Step” letter will be sent which will include information on advisement.

What if the class I want is closed?

You can go to the professor and ask if it is possible to get an overflow. If he agrees, he can tell you the procedure for getting the overflow added to your GOSOLAR file. Overflows are not automatically granted, and it is not mandatory that professors do so. There are also fire safety regulations which limit the number of people in classrooms.

What if I get ill, or discover I’m overwhelmed by the classwork after a week or two? Or what if I just don't like the class?

You can discuss this with the professor if you wish. However, please note that it might be to your advantage to withdraw from the class. If you do not intend to complete the class (regular attendance, completion of required work, etc.) you must withdraw or risk a failing grade.
