DESCRIPTION:<p>Event Description:<br />\nPresented in collaboration with PU
SH Theater (Rochester\, NY)<br />\n	Presenting the Atlanta premiere of Rica
rdo Zohn-Muldoon’s chamber opera\, Comala\, based on the novel Pedro Páram
o by Mexican author Juan Rulfo. In this work\, Juan Preciado\, the son of
Pedro Páramo\, guides the reader\, narrating in the first person\, until d
eath surprises him midway through the novel. From that point on\, he becom
es a peaceful spectator in the “chorus” of the dead as the story continues
to unfold without him. In the chamber opera\, the orderly flux of time ha
s been derailed\, and the borders between past\, present\, life and afterl
ife have dissolved and the dead and the living interact continuously. Wher
eas the living act under the pressure of time and seek immediate communica
tion\, the dead\, free from the bonds of time\, reflect endlessly through
music. Therefore\, the living characters express themselves in normal spee
ch\, while the dead characters sing. The libretto was assembled from fragm
ents extracted (without alteration) from the novel\, in the interest of pr
eserving the poetic language of Rulfo. The work unfolds in 13 continuous s
cenes.</p>\n<p>Admission Information<br />\nThis event is FREE and open to
