ATLANTA – Helen Aderhold, community leader and higher education philanthropist, has given Georgia State University a $500,000 gift for scholarship support in memory of her late husband, John.
The gift was made to the John Aderhold Fund for Excellence, which supports unrestricted scholarship funding for students.
“Helen Aderhold’s gift is noteworthy because of its importance in helping Georgia State achieve its goal of ensuring the success of students from all backgrounds,” said Georgia State President Mark P. Becker. “Such gifts as Mrs. Aderhold’s help make it possible for Georgia State to support students who otherwise may not have the opportunity to attend college and earn a degree. We are honored to celebrate the start of our centennial year with Mrs. Aderhold’s gift.”
Helen Aderhold has long-standing ties to the university. In 1976, she graduated from Georgia State with a degree in history. She was a longtime member of Georgia State’s Athletic Association and Alumni Association boards, and she has been a Georgia State University board trustee for the past 15 years. Aderhold is currently a member of the university’s Centennial honorary committee.
“Georgia State University holds a special place in the hearts of the Aderhold family,” said Helen Aderhold. “I am honored to make this gift in John’s memory knowing that it will provide important resources to help Georgia State students succeed in earning their degrees and ultimately going on to thrive in the work world.”
In the late 1990s, John Aderhold — a developer who oversaw the creative reuse of historic buildings in downtown Atlanta — made a $2.5 million gift to Georgia State as a birthday present to his wife. The gift supported the construction of the Helen M. Aderhold Learning Center at the university. The center, in the city block bound by Luckie, Forsyth, Poplar and Broad streets, has served tens of thousands of Georgia State students since it opened 10 years ago.
The John Aderhold Fund was established with a $500,000 gift made by The University Financing Foundation in February 2012.
