ATLANTA – Georgia State University’s Center for International and Collaborative Arts is presenting “Mauricio Kagel: Film Music, Music Performance, Performance Film” at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall.
The event is free and open to the public. The Florence Kopleff Recital Hall is located in the Arts and Humanities Building, 10 Peachtree Center Ave. The entrance to the recital hall is on Gilmer Street.
A German-Argentine composer, Kagel, who died in 2008, is most noted for his theatrical contributions to classical music performance. He produced more than 170 scores and 19 films during 50 years of his life.
Bent Frequency Contemporary Music Ensemble, an Atlanta-based chamber music ensemble, will collaborate with the film company, “Frequent Small Meals,” to present the program of Kagel’s short films and music.
“Kagel’s films and music are compelling,” said Robert Ambrose, associate director of the School of Music and music director for Bent Frequency. “It’s rare to see music and film together, especially music such as Kagel’s with so many theatrical events in it and a huge degree of showmanship.”
The evening will offer two of Kagel’s short films “Unter Strom” and “Antithese” and performances of Kagel’s “Schattenklange” for bass clarinet and “Match for Two Cellos and Percussion.” The “Match” piece is a dialogue for two celli with a percussionist serving as the umpire. It is not only a match in sounds, but also in physical reactions, keeping the “umpire” percussionist busy.
Many of Kagel’s pieces give specific theatrical instructions to the performers, such as to adopt certain facial expressions while playing, to make stage entrances in a particular way and to physically interact with other performers.
A reception will be held before the concert at 6:30 p.m. at the recital hall.
