Georgia State will kick off its final winter homecoming this week, as the university transitions to festivities centered on football in the fall.
Homecoming 2010 will be held Jan. 26 to Feb. 6 and includes events for students, faculty and staff members, as well as alumni and community supporters, during the day and at night.
The theme, "Elements of Blue," highlights the different aspects of the university that work together to make Georgia State a vibrant institution, said Carole Golder, Homecoming Committee 2010 chair.
"Homecoming is a chance for people to interact with faculty, students and staff they might not normally see in their everyday routines," Golder said. "Come out, have fun and show your Panther spirit."
The homecoming basketball game is set for 6 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the Sports Arena as the men's team takes on William & Mary. GSU students get in free with a Panther ID, and the first 1,000 fans receive a complimentary t-shirt. Get ready for the big game that day with the Homecoming Tailgate Extravaganza from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. on the Urban Life Plaza.
The women's team takes on William & Mary the following day at 1 p.m. in the Sports Arena.
Georgia State's Alumni Association also will be holding its Annual Homecoming Celebration to build excitement for the Homecoming Game.
From 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the Urban Life Building's West Exhibit area, alumni are invited to come out to reconnect with friends and enjoy good food and drink before cheering the Panthers to victory. Tickets are $20 per person for the Alumni reception and game, and $15 for reception only. To register, call the Alumni Association office at 404-413-2190.
Come meet next year's football coaches and hear head coach Bill Curry talk about the prospects being signed to the Panthers football team during the Signing Day event at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the Student Center Ballroom.
Cheer for the men's basketball team at 7 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the Sports Arena as they take on George Mason University and the women's basketball team at 6 p.m. on Feb. 4 as they play Northeastern University in the Sports Arena.
Homecoming Week will also include school spirit favorites such as the Greek Showcase at 7 p.m. on Jan. 30 in the Sports Arena and the annual Golf Cart Parade, which starts at 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the corner of Piedmont and John Wesley Dobbs avenues.
The Homecoming Carnival is scheduled for 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 3 in Hurt Park, Unity Plaza and Gilmer Street with free food, music, carnival booth, game and other activities.
"Homecoming is an important time in the life of a Panther," said Greg Abt, president of the Georgia State's Student Government Association. "Homecoming is a great chance to come together and celebrate the things that make this university great."
A new event this year, faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in Elements of Service from 8 a.m. to noon and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 6.
