The sun isn't up, and the vast majority of their college classmates are still in bed, but the football team at Georgia State knows they have to rise early to stay ahead of the countdown clock. That's the clock that ticks down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until Sept. 2, 2010, when the GSU Panther football team will play its first game.
At 6:30 a.m. each morning, Coach Bill Curry meets with the team, giving them pointers on how to be better players and better young men. They analyze video with their coaches before jumping on buses to head to practice. Under the bright lights of the Georgia Dome, they drill, sweat, run and throw for hours before hitting the weight room. Standouts are emerging. Players are growing in both strength and character. And come Sept. 2, 2010, the team will be ready, Curry says. "The intensity is picking up."
Curry has said that consistency is the goal for football practices.
"We're starting to understand how hard we have to practice every single day in order to get better," Curry said recently.
Fans will soon have a chance to show their support.
Season tickets for the inaugural Georgia State football season go on sale at 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7. Fans can begin purchasing tickets by calling the Georgia State ticket office at 1.866.GA.STATE or online at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com.
The schedule, which kicks off at the Georgia Dome on Thursday, Sept. 2 versus Shorter, now includes seven home games with the addition of Lamar on Nov. 6 Ð the home game against Lambuth has been moved to Sept. 11. The Panthers also host Jacksonville State (Sept. 18), Morehead State (Oct. 2), Savannah State (Oct. 9), and North Carolina Central (Oct. 16).
