Congressman John Lewis Speaks At Freshman Convocation
Incoming freshmen are invited to attend Georgia State University’s convocation, which will feature the Honorable John Lewis, a U.S. Congressman and civil rights icon.
The event starts at 3 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Georgia State Sports Arena.
Freshman Convocation is a formal induction ceremony to welcome all new freshmen to the university. Georgia State President Mark P. Becker will lead the class through a medallion ceremony and recitation of the Freshman Pledge.
Lewis, the author of “March: Book One,” which has been selected as the fall First-Year Book, will be the keynote speaker. His commitment to justice and nonviolence has taken him from an Alabama sharecropper’s farm to the halls of Congress, from a segregated schoolroom to the 1963 march on Washington, and from receiving beatings from state troopers to receiving the Medal of Freedom from the first African-American president. “March: Book One” is a graphic novel that chronicles his youth and early work in the civil rights movement.
This event is mandatory for all freshmen, residential and commuter. Doors open at 2:15 p.m. Free parking is available in G Deck and additional parking is available in M Deck for $7 cash. Dress is business casual.

Convocation will be followed by a block party, from 4-6 p.m., at Hurt Park and Gilmer Street.
The party, which is open to the public, will feature interactive games and meet-and-greet opportunities with student-athletes from several sports.
