The fifth annual Nonprofit Executive Roundtable was held Thursday, April 28, 2005, in the Smart Seminar Room on the 7th floor of the AYSPS Building on the Georgia State University campus. Fifty-six community nonprofit leaders and scholars met over breakfast for a morning of presentations and discussion regarding effective decision making on nonprofit organization finance. The event was underwritten again this year by the Northern Trust Company. Photos of the event are available here.
Dr. Michael Rushton of the Nonprofit Studies Program served as Master of Ceremonies for the Roundtable, and introduced the two new faculty members in attendance who will be joining the Nonprofit Studies Program in the fall: Dr. Eric Twombly and Dr. Dennis Young. Dean Roy Bahl further elaborated on Dr. Young's appointment to the School's prestigious Bernard B. and Eugenia A. Ramsey Chair.
Keynote Speaker
In celebration of Dr. Young's appointment, he was asked to be the keynote speaker for this year's Roundtable. Dr. Young will be joining the Andrew Young School in the fall from Case Western Reserve University, where he is currently Professor in the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. There he founded and served as the Director of the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations. He also serves as CEO of the National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise. A former President of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), he recently received this organization's Award for Distinguished Achievement and Leadership in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research. Dr. Young is editing two forthcoming volumes, Financing Nonprofits: Bridging Theory and Practice and Wise Decision Making in Uncertain Times: Using Nonprofit Resources Effectively. Using themes from these books, his keynote address was titled, "Forget Panaceas: Finding the Right Mix of Financing for Your Organization." A question and answer session involving the Roundtable participants followed the keynote speech.
Panel Discussion on Nonprofit Revenue Sources
The second half of the morning was devoted to a panel discussion. Dr. Michael Rushton opened the panel with some summary remarks on Dr. Young's presentation. Three heads of local nonprofit organizations then spoke about the pros and cons of various revenue sources from their point of view, and how they have attempted to balance these sources over time to achieve the best results for the organization. These panelists were Kim Anderson, Executive Director of AID Atlanta, Lisa Cremin, Director of the Metro Atlanta Arts Fund, and Hattie Dorsey, CEO of Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership. Dr. Bruce Seaman of the AYSPS summarized the panel presentations, and moderated a discussion on the topic with Roundtable participants.
