2002 Nonprofit Executive Roundtable

The second annual Nonprofit Executive Roundtable was held Friday, May 10, 2002 at the Capital Suite of the Georgia State University Student Center in downtown Atlanta. CEOs, Executive Directors, foundation executives, and other prominent nonprofit leaders and scholars in the region convened for a morning of in-depth discussion of critical issues in the nonprofit sector. Dr. David Van Slyke served as Master of Ceremonies for the Roundtable, ushering in Dean Roy Bahl to discuss the development of the Nonprofit Studies Program, Dr. Michael Mescon, holder of the Ramsey Chair of Private Enterprise, to introduce the keynote speaker, and Ms. Alicia Philipp, Executive Director of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, to introduce the NSP research presentation.

Keynote Speaker

The keynote speaker for this year’s roundtable was Dr. Burton Weisbrod, John Evans Professor of Economics and Fellow of the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University, and one of the nation’s best known and respected nonprofit economists. Dr. Weisbrod led a conversation about the classic distinctions among institutional forms (private, public, nonprofit) in the U.S., including their relative strengths and limitations in accomplishing various goals, the increased blurring of these sectors, and what this trend suggests about new partnership opportunities and arrangements for building social capital in a community.

Nonprofit Studies Program Research Presentation

Dr. David Van Slyke and Dr. Janet Johnson of the Nonprofit Studies Program presented the first quarterly results of a study sponsored by the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta on individual philanthropy and social capital. The study is based on detailed telephone surveys of metro Atlanta households, and will continue for a total of five quarters. Using two previous studies conducted by the Andrew Young School as “benchmarks”, evidence was presented regarding how metro Atlanta’s giving, volunteering, and levels of trust have been affected by the September 11th tragedies and the recent downturn in the economy.
