James Alm is Dean and Professor of Economics in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has also taught at Syracuse University and at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned his master's degree in economics at the University of Chicago and his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Professor Alm teaches and conducts research in the area of public economics. Much of his research has examined the responses of individuals and firms to taxation, in such areas as the tax treatment of the family, tax compliance, tax reform, the line item veto, social security, housing, indexation, and tax and expenditure limitations. His work has been published in leading economics journals, and he is the author of six books. He has also worked extensively on fiscal and decentralization reforms overseas, including projects in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Jamaica, Grenada, Turkey, Egypt, Hungary, China, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Uganda, Nigeria, India, and Nepal. He is currently Editor of Public Finance Review and an Associate Editor of Economic Inquiry and Review of Economics of the Household. Kenneth L. Bernhardt has published numerous textbooks, monographs and articles on marketing and consumer behavior in professional journals such as Journal of Business Research, Journal of Marketing and Public Policy, Marketing and American Education Research Journal, and Journal of Retailing. He is a former president of the Association for Consumer Research and is former chairman of the American Marketing Association. Bernhardt's current research interests involve consumer attitudes and behavior, public policy issues in marketing and the marketing of services. He is chair of the Marketing Department, has won numerous teaching awards, and has been engaged in consulting and research assignments for many businesses, including BellSouth, Kimberly-Clark, Chick-fil-A and UPS.

James C. Cox is past president of the Economic Science Association and current member of the editorial boards of several journals. He is the Noah Langdale Jr. Chair in Economics, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, and Director of the Experimental Economics Center. Professor Cox is leading development and national dissemination of EconPort, an economics component of the National Science Digital Library that provides support for the use of controlled experiments with human subjects in teaching and research. His research interests center on experimental economics and applied microeconomic theory. He has conducted research on mathematical economics, integration of portfolio choice and consumer demand theories, public expenditure theory, credit rationing, energy policy, economics and political economics of minimum wage legislation, auction markets, job search models, decentralized mechanisms for control of monopoly, the utility hypothesis, the preference reversal phenomenon, procurement contracting, the lottery payoff experimental procedure, topics in social epistemology and legal theory, and group vs. individual behavior in strategic market games and fairness games.

Professor Cox’s current research includes theoretical modeling and laboratory experiments with small- and large-stakes risk aversion, e-commerce with combinatorial demands’ and centipede games vs. Dutch auctions. His recent and current research includes theoretical modeling and experiments on: trust, reciprocity, and altruism; voluntary contributions to public goods; and common property resources.

Pam Scholder Ellen is associate professor of Marketing in the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. She is President-Elect of the American Marketing Association (AMA) Academic Council, a long-term board member of AMA's Marketing & Society Special Interest Group and of the planning board of the Marketing & Public Policy Conference. She currently serves on the Editorial Review Boards of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, International Review on Public and Non Profit Marketing, Journal of Consumer Policy, and the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science.

She has worked extensively with nonprofits in the Atlanta area, conducting marketing research to help them better understand their client and donor needs. This included four years as a consultant with the 1996 Paralympic Games in addition to work with over 30 different nonprofit, educational and governmental organizations.

Dr. Ellen’s research addresses perceptual biases. Specifically, her work addresses how messages, claims and labels affect consumer beliefs, attitudes and behavior in areas such as environmentalism, cause-related marketing, privacy, and health. Her research has appeared in academic publications such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Consumer Affairs and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

Paul G. Farnham's principal interests are health economics, public finance and public policy. He has served as a visiting health economist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he focused on the business costs of HIV/AIDS and the economic evaluation of HIV prevention programs. He teaches health economics to students in the Master of Health Administration program, public sector economics to students in the Master of Public Administration program and managerial economics to students in the Master of Business Administration and Executive MBA programs. He recently developed a new interdisciplinary undergraduate course, "Disease Prevention and Control."

Paul J. Ferraro is an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Dr. Ferraro's research activities focus on the design of cost-effective environmental policies and the institutions that implement the policies, the integration of biophysical and economic information in spatial modeling for environmental decision-making, and the experimental analysis of individual decision-making. His research has been funded by, among others, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, World Wildlife Fund, and the N.Y. Water Institute.

John Floyd is a Managing Director at Trusco Capital Management, where he focuses on investment product management. Prior to assuming his role at Trusco he headed SunTrust Bank's Endowment and Foundation line of business. In that role he worked directly and indirectly with not-for-profit entities across the southeast. He has served on numerous not-for-profit boards from the neighborhood to the regional level and currently serves on the boards of Brenau University and the Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges.

At the Andrew Young School, Floyd teaches the course "Nonprofit Financial Management" in the nonprofit management track of the MPA and MS-Urban Studies programs. He holds a BA in economics from Haverford College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Carol D. Hansen is an Associate Professor of Human Resource Development at Georgia State University. She teaches courses in organizational culture, intercultural organizational behavior, and the diagnosis of HRD interventions.

Dr. Hansen received a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her MA and BS from the University of Illinois at Champaign. Her practitioner experience was gained as an HRD branch chief at the United States Department of State and as a consultant for a large international HR firm where she worked with clients such as the Red Cross. She has also worked with study abroad programs such as the Experient in International Living and she also led a study for Emory University Health Care. Of final note, Dr. Hansen was a Fulbright scholar to India and her biography appears in the Who's Who of Emerging Leaders and of American Women.

Bill Kahnweiler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. He teaches courses in, conducts and publishes research about, and is quoted frequently in the national and local media on various "people issues" in the work place. He has assisted clients ranging from Fortune 50 multi-national corporations to small social service agencies on human resource issues, including management and employee selection, development, evaluation, motivation, and leadership. He has been an editor of Organization Development Journal.

Dr. Kahnweiler's research focuses on employee involvement in decision making, innovative and effective career development interventions in the ever-changing work place, and leadership and consulting competencies of human resource professionals. He has published more than 80 articles in both scholarly and popular outlets, and has presented papers at numerous national and international conferences. His book, Shaping Your HR Role: Succeeding in Today's Organizations, was published by Elsevier in 2005 and focuses on career development strategies for HR Professionals. Dr. Kahnweiler also serves as a reviewer for several human resource journals and continues to consult with a variety of for-profit, nonprofit, and governmental organizations.

Susan Laury is Chair of the Department of Economics and Associate Professor of Economics at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Dr. Laury's current research focuses on the reasons why individuals contribute to public goods, which has implications for agencies and organizations that rely on private donations for support. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, Public Choice, and the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. Her work has received funding from the National Science Foundation.

Deon Locklin is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies. She brings extensive experience delivering training, consultation, and executive coaching within human service organizations and service delivery systems. She has conducted over 500 seminars, presentations, and guest lectures for administrators, governing boards, and state-appointed councils. Employed by Georgia State University since 1992, Locklin has created and managed numerous development programs for emerging leaders in nonprofit organizations and state agencies. She assists organizations with market-driven strategy development, the design and implementation of leadership succession programs, and organizational performance evaluation. In addition, she has conducted multiple field-based research projects in needs analysis, customer satisfaction assessment, and performance measurement.

In her current role, Locklin works with over 250 nonprofit organizations located throughout the southeast. Her work focuses on building organizational and leadership capacity within organizations. Locklin received her master’s degree at Auburn University and is currently ABD for a doctorate in Organizational Leadership.

Nicholas Marudas is Assistant Professor of Accounting in the Accounting and Finance Department at Auburn University Montgomery's School of Business. He joined the faculty in 2002 after completing his doctorate in accounting at Georgia State University. He has an MBA in accounting from New York University and a BA in chemistry from University of Maryland Baltimore County. Dr. Marudas has over 11 years of internal audit experience with CARE and Pfizer and three years of external audit experience with KPMG. He teaches Auditing Financial Statements, Seminar in Auditing, and Principles of Financial Accounting. Dr. Marudas is a Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Public Accountant and consults in the areas of forensic accounting and auditing, and internal controls. He also conducts operational audits in developing countries. Dr. Marudas’s major research interests are in financial accounting, especially of nonprofit organizations, and internal and external auditing.

Michael Mescon served on the faculty of the Georgia State University College of Business for many years, including serving as Chair of the Department of Management and as Regents Professor of Management. Dr. Mescon was also the founder and first holder of the Ramsey Chair of Private Enterprise. He capped his university career as Dean of the College of Business, and continues as Dean Emeritus. He holds honorary doctoral degrees at The Citadel and at the College of Charleston.

In 1968, Dr. Mescon founded The Mescon Group, an organizational design consulting firm, which in 2001 merged with HA&W, the largest independent accounting firm in Atlanta. He is the author or co-author of over 300 articles and books. He is the lead author of the introductory business textbook, Business Today, which received the 2002 McGuffey Award for longevity and excellence from the Text and Academic Authors Association. He is also co-author of Management: Individual and Organization Effectiveness, a best-selling management text in the U.S. that has also been translated into Russian.

Dr. Mescon is a founding member of the AYSPS Advisory Board, as well as a member of the AYSPS Nonprofit Studies Program Advisory Board. Dr. Mescon is active in community affairs and public service, which has included serving as chairperson of the Metropolitan Atlanta Red Cross and as Heart Fund Chairperson for the Georgia Heart Association. He currently serves on the boards of Northside Hospital, Jewish Homes, Adaptive Learning Center, and the ALS Foundation, and on the Advisory Board of Northern Trust.

John O'Kane is Senior Vice President and Campaign Director at Coxe Curry & Associates. At Coxe Curry, he works with a variety of fund-raising clients. He is a frequent lecturer, trainer, consultant and writer on topics related to nonprofit managing and training. He has also served as a volunteer on numerous boards and advisory councils.

At the Andrew Young School, O'Kane teaches the course "Nonprofit Fundraising" in the nonprofit management track of the MPA and MS-Urban Studies programs, and serves on the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies Advisory Board. He has been teaching at Georgia State since 1990.

Prior to joining Coxe Curry in 1988, O'Kane served as Vice President of Human Resources with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. He has also worked as Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Metropolitan Atlanta. O'Kane holds a Master's degree in social work from Washington University, and is a state certified social worker. He also has earned the designation of Certified Fund-Raising Executive.

Tony Pinder is the Executive Director at the Andrew Young Center for International Affairs at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He previously served as Associate Dean of Global Studies and Director of the International Center for Economic Freedom at Dillard University in New Orleans. He also teaches International Economics. Pinder has a Bachelor’s degree in finance from Morehouse College and earned his master’s degree in international economics and Latin American studies from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Before working in the educational sphere, Pinder served as Director of the Minority and National Recruitment Initiatives for the U.S. Peace Corps. His experience has ranged from development specialist to marketing analyst to grants manager.

Ted Poister is a professor of public administration at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University, where he teaches courses in public management and applied research methods. His research focuses on strategic planning and management, performance measurement, and customer feedback, and he has worked with numerous organizations in these areas, particularly in the field of transportation. Dr. Poister holds the Ph.D. of Social Science degree from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.

Before coming to Georgia State 20 years ago, Dr. Poister taught at Penn State University for several years, where he conducted a study on the variation in costs among nonprofit organizations providing residential and other services to individuals with mental disabilities. Currently, he serves on an advisory panel which provides guidance and feedback on planning, performance measurement, and program evaluation processes to the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. His most recent book, published in 2003 by Jossey-Bass, is Measuring Performance in Public and Nonprofit Organizations.

Edward L. Queen, director of the D. Abbott Turner Program in Ethics and Servant Leadership at Emory University’s Center for Ethics, received his B.A. from Birmingham-Southern College, his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, and his J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis. Prior to joining the Center for Ethics, Queen served as Senior Researcher on the Ford Foundation funded Charitable Choice Implementation Project. He also served as the founding director of both the Religion and Philanthropy Project at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy and the Islamic Society of North America's Fellowship Program in Nonprofit Management and Governance.  A former program officer at Lilly Endowment, Inc. with a major responsibility for grants in nonprofit governance and leadership, Queen also has consulted with numerous nonprofit, governmental, and educational organizations including the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights of the Republic of Macedonia, the Pew Charitable Trusts, Independent Sector, the Faculty of Law, South East European University, Tetovo, Macedonia, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
 
A specialist in issues related to religion and culture and religion and philanthropy, Dr. Queen's research interests are religion and nonprofits, professional ethics, democratization, human rights, and civil society. He has written, coauthored, or edited numerous books on these topics, including Serving Those In Need: A Handbook for Managing Faith-Based Human Services Organizations (2000), Philanthropy in the World's Traditions (1998), and The Encyclopedia of American Religious History (1992, rev. ed. 2002).

Janet Rechtman is an independent consultant in Atlanta, Ga., who specializes in helping non-profit and community based leaders embrace the challenges of internal and external collaboration. Rechtman has her BA from Emory University in Atlanta, a Master's degree from York University in Toronto and is currently a doctoral candidate in the Ph.D in Leadership and Change program at Antioch University. She teaches a graduate course in non-profit marketing at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Her articles, poetry and fiction have appeared in a wide variety of publications. Rechtman is currently chair of the board of the Foxfire Fund, Inc. and a member of the YWCA Academy of Women Achievers, Midtown Rotary Club and Leadership Atlanta. She has conducted workshops at a number of national conferences including the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, the International Association of Facilitators, the Community Leadership Association, Southeastern Councils of Foundations, Georgia Gerontology Society and the International Leadership Association.

Derek Shendell, D.Env, MPH is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Public Health. Dr. Shendell is an environmental public health scientist with work and research experiences in various settings at the local, regional (counties), state and federal level (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory). Just prior to joining GSU IPH, Dr. Shendell worked for the non-profit Community Action to Fight Asthma Initiative (CAFA-I) for two years. He was State Office’s Director of Environmental Health Sciences, Education and Special Projects, and, in addition, for eight months he was Interim Executive Director (CAFA-I) and the direct technical assistance (science-based education, interventions, and advocacy) provider to eight local asthma coalitions in the San Joaquin Valley. CAFA is funded mainly by The California Endowment.

Dr. Shendell's nonprofit practice and applied research interests result from his professional and volunteer experiences, and his upbringing given his mother and paternal grandmother's work in the nonprofit sector. He is interested in how nonprofits access and use the best available science for educational and physical interventions, evidence-based advocacy, and grant applications, i.e., sustainability. In addition, he is interested in urban/suburban and rural disparities or similarities in nonprofit activities related to asthma, and other chronic diseases of childhood, with known or suspected environmental quality and/or clinical management components.

Andrew T. Sumner is Associate Professor and Holder of the Joe Taylor Chair of Health Administration in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. He has participated in several major research and consulting studies of health care organizations, including program evaluations of Georgia's Medicaid managed care program, mental health system, and PASRR Program for nursing home residents. He has over 25 years of experience in healthcare, and his papers have appeared in leading health care publications such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Medical Care, Health Services Research, Health Care Management Review, and Hospitals and Health Networks.

Dr. Sumner serves on the boards and advisory councils of a number of local, state, and international organizations in the health administration field. He was previously affiliated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where he directed CDC's world-wide information systems, coordinated center-wide evaluation activities, and directed the management systems activities of NIOSH. Before that his experience was in health services research and engineering for the USPHS Hospitals, the Medical College of Georgia, Georgia Tech, DuPont, and Tennessee Eastman Company. Dr. Sumner received his Sc.D. in health policy and management from the Johns Hopkins University and his M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering (Health Systems) and Bachelor's in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Tech.

Erdal Tekin is an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Dr. Tekin's current research focuses on the effects of welfare reform on single mothers' child care, employment, and welfare decisions. His other interests include the economic determinants of juvenile crime, the demand for medical care in developing countries, and the determinants of child care subsidy receipt.

John Thomas is a Professor in the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. He has an extensive record of scholarship and applied research on urban affairs and public policy with three books and more than 50 articles in print. Much of this research focuses on how to build a stronger society, as especially through community capacity building and civic action. Thomas also serves as one of three editors of the American Review of Public Administration, which includes nonprofit administration in its purview.

In 1998, Dr. Thomas led the effort to establish nonprofit studies as a part of the Masters Degree in Public Administration at Georgia State. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from Northwestern University and a B.A. (magna cum laude) and M.A. in journalism and mass communications from the University of Minnesota.

Peter Topping is the Executive Director of Executive Education and Senior Lecturer at the Roberto C. Goizueta Business School at Emory University in Atlanta. He is responsible for leading Emory’s customized executive education programs that serve hundreds of managers and executives per year. For several years, Dr. Topping was a Visiting Professor (summers) at EM Lyon, one of France’s leading business schools. Previously, he served as Director of the Daniel Management Center and Distinguished Lecturer in the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. He began his career in executive education at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he served as a faculty member and senior administrator for a decade.

Dr. Topping serves on the Editorial Boards of the new International Journal of Leadership Education. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the University International Consortium for Executive Education (UNICON). Peter recently published a white paper on “Measuring ROI in Executive Development” through this organization. His most recent book, Managerial Leadership, was released for publication by McGraw-Hill in January 2002. He earned a Ph.D. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

James L. Wolk, Professor and Director of the School of Social Work at Georgia State University since 1995, received his BA in Social Welfare from Cal State Long Beach, Master's of Social Work from the University of Missouri–Columbia, MPA from Cal State Fullerton, and his Doctorate in Social Work from Tulane University in New Orleans. Prior to entering academia, he worked for several years as a social worker in a state psychiatric hospital with the long term mentally ill and substance abusers. For two years, he was the Director of Substance Abuse Services, Department of Mental Health, County of Orange, in Santa Ana, California.

Dr. Wolk taught for four years at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan and 14 years at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield Missouri. He has published over 20 articles in scholarly journals in the areas of substance abuse, politics, and program evaluation.
