PAUS 8461, Ethics and Public Administration. This course, taught by Dr. Carolyn Bourdeaux, fills a requirement for the MPA Management and Finance Track.

  • The first part of the course will cover the philosophical underpinnings of ethical reasoning as well as techniques for ethical reflection at a personal and organizational level.
  • The second part will consider issues related to the practice of ethical decision-making in public sector settings, including considerations of social justice and equity, lying, “whistle blowing,” and leadership versus representation in a democratic society.

PAUS 8731, Managing Diversity in the Global Context. Taught by Dr. Carol Hansen, this course is an excellent elective for many MPA career tracks and MS-UPS specializations. It would also fit well with many other degrees offered at Georgia State. This course will focus on cultural differences in employee, management, and organizational behavior. It will cover issues such as:

  • Trends in internationalization and immigration
  • Definitions of culture and descriptions of cultural frames that impact the work place
  • Cross-cultural differences in work and decision-making styles
  • International teams
  • Expatriate adjustment and related HR issues
  • Working in Third World organizations
